Mission Statement

o create an inexpensive rural living and working environment that will provide a measure of peace and security for the family.

Our environment is designed to be separate from conventional city or suburban living environments usually found in the U.S. Considering the times and seasons you may want to study and learn what we have done to create a semi self contained style of living.

We believe that regardless of the cultural and economic turmoil we see unfolding around us there will still be the 'essential'  commercial energy resources available to sustain life. Otherwise anarchy would quickly ensue providing little hope of survival in any circumstance.  However don't think we are not prepared for long interruptions in energy supplies.  We can sustain ourselves for several months if all outside services were not available.  Our approach to living has involved careful planning. We now feel prepared to face and survive unforeseen environmental and cultural events that could be harmful to our future.

Your Physical Location is Very Important

Our 13 acre site is in a rural location in Kansas.  It is away from other residences and businesses. This location is designated a 'frontier' area by the U.S. Census.

The lifestyle intent is to create an environment suitable for peace, security and quiet where few people will intrude unless asked. We choose to remain anonymous to most people living in our community although our door is always open to any who want to visit. We know many people quite well. The way our compound is designed provides better security than any insurance coverage we can buy.

The site plan ,(see table of contents page), outlines the components of our compound to include (2) residences, (3) car garage, fabrication shop, fine arts design and production studio and gallery, self contained water systems, a 2000 gallon propane fuel system for heating and cooking, emergency power generating system, walled garden, patio and greenhouse, and extensive (9) point frost free underground water distribution system for individually timed irrigation environments.  We grow and maintain grass, clover, various flower beds & vines, berries, fruits, herbs and vegetables.  We have no livestock.

Suggestions for Planning

Be aware of your circumstances

Select a remote location far enough from a city so as to not have local authorities intrude and interfere with your plans and substantially raise your taxes and living costs. Do not broadcast your project plans to the local community. Keep the project to yourself and those who will be helping you plan and execute it. We believe this is in the best interests of you, your family, and your hired workers.  It also enables you to maintain a higher level of security at the outset.

Own your own land, preferably with some remote sites suitable for a compound. Make sure that the local utility companies will provide necessary power, gas, and trash collection services in your proposed area for construction. Avoid zoned areas other than pasture, agricultural, or wilderness designations. City zoning means codes, inspectors, and expensive permits.

A desire for you and your family to live separate but connected from your fellow man for extended periods. You may wish to establish a portion of your compound as a bed and breakfast or hunting lodge for tax purposes. In this way you can write off a portion of your construction costs to the business.  Please consult a tax attorney for further advice prior to breaking ground.

A desire to have things your way and not that of your neighbors. If you are tired of living in among a cadre of unknown people in a developed community who 'appear' to have the same living agenda as yours, you probably will have already come to the same conclusion we have. That idea that 'convenience' may be at the sacrifice of your  personal freedoms.

Convenience, meaning short trips to shop or entertainment centers may soon come at too great a risk.  Increasing incidents of street crime, drive by shootings, break ins, and personal assaults characterize a society on the edge of economic and social chaos. If you see surveillance cameras and hear gunshots and sirens everywhere you go I think you get the point. There is another way.  You may want to become more self-reliant.

Have access to building funds not controlled by some entity, such as a bank.  You must have the funds 'secured' prior to starting this project. If you are thinking about taking out a construction loan you better quit reading this now.  There will be no money saved, our current economic system will make sure of that.

Cultivate the desire to learn from your mistakes and be willing to continue a difficult project until you complete it. This type of project is not for timid people. If you don't think you have the expertise to design, build, and especially follow good advice from others you probably will never complete the project without professional help. There are no books written to cover every contingency you will encounter.

As a retired facilities engineer and electrical contractor, I will likely be available to help you if you request it.

If you decide to launch such a project  your reward will be the freedom and security not easily found in America for the past 50 years.
